Volunteer Teaching Experience at Outreach College, UHM
(October, 2016-April, 2017)
I had a chance to teach Japanese to advanced class students as a volunteer teacher at the Outreach College Japanese course.
Students were all enthusiastic toward learning Japanese and deep thinkers. In the free conversation activities with Japanese-speaking volunteers, we discussed a lot of topics that students addressed.
Examples of topics (1):
-
Special education in Japan
-
Working environment in Japan
-
The rate of suicide in Japan
-
What do couples do on Valentine's day in Japan?
-
What kind of superstitions do you know/believe?
Regarding the topics above, We mainly discuss the difference between the U.S. and Japan.
Examples of topics (2):
-
Good/bad memories of school days
-
Are you good at cooking? How did you become a good cook?
-
Do you use on-line shopping sites? Can you recommend nice sites?
We also shared our experiences with classmates and Japanese-speaking volunteers about these topics.
They gave me a card on the last class day in 2016 and 2017. I really appreciate their kindness and help.
